Summary on Grant Application Form |
Work in the pharmaceutical industry in the US has arrived at the conclusion that it is not the type of organisational structure that governs product development success but he mechanisms used to overcome boundaries within that organisation. If this experience is valid for other industries, then it has major implications for the way in which companies approach the problem of organising for product development. This project will use a longitudinal study of the Rover Group's product development to examine if the above findings hold true in other industrial environments. It will thus indicate if a boundary-based view of product development is likely to produce improvements in product development performance. If this viewpoint proves to have worth, potential mechanisms will be identified to 'work the organisational boundaries'. These will be multidisciplinary and may emanate from information technology, structural or procedural sources. These mechanisms will be incorporated into a preliminary tool which will illustrate how companies may chose effective mechanisms.
