Summary on Grant Application Form
Experimental studies of the flow of powder into various shaped dies will be conducted. Quasi-static constitutive laws will be developed from the resulting observations and suitable numerical procedures will be developed for the flow stage of the manufacturing process. These constitutive laws will be further developed to allow powder transfer and the early stages of powder compaction to be analysed. Constitutive laws for Stages 1 and 2 of the compaction process will be developed based on the results of suitable experiments performed in a triaxial cell. The resulting models will be incorporated into the commercial finite element package ABAQUS through the UMAT facility. Suitable friction laws will be developed and employed in the analysis of compaction and ejection of the component from the die. Suitable interface programmes will be developed for transfering information between the different programmes. The resulting computational studies will be validated by conducting compaction studies in a fully instrumented cell. Robust process selection procedures will be developed for the design of suitable processing routes.
