Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will develop an understanding of the scattering of ultrasound from aggregated particulate dispersions which will form the basis of the design of robust, cheap sensors for the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. Previous work has shown that ultrasonic spectra change dramatically upon aggregation and the Leeds theoreticians are currently modelling these changes. A key requirement is to validate the information from the ultrasonic experiments. The University of Bristol has developed a large range of model colloidal systems, and has studied their homo- and hetero-aggregation using static and dynamic light scattering (eg to determine fractal dimensions). The use of highly swollen microgel particles allows the extension of light scattering techniques into concentration regimes that may be probed using ultrasonics. The IFR has a highly sensitive ultrasonic spectrometer which operates over the frequency range 2 - 100 MHz. Concurrent theoretical work already in progress at Leeds will allow the interpretation of the ultrasonic data. On-line instrumentation will be developed in the next stage in collaboration with the Nottingham Group (Professor R E Challis).
