Summary on Grant Application Form
As part of the Product Introduction Process (PIP), computer-based optimisation methods are increasingly being used in the early design phase. Optimisers that are capable of evaluating performance parameters such as structural and aerodynamic efficiency are now reaching a state of considerable maturity. It is widely accepted, however, that cost is relatively difficult to estimate accurately at an early design stage as compared with functional parameters.A number of novel approaches are being proposed in this research proposal;1. by using a suitable produce model it is suggested that the implied cost can be inferred from the emerging design definition.2. New ways of presenting cost data are suggested. This is analogous to the graphic output from Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element tools. One idea is to provide a means of visualising cost information in the form of a cost map . By applying various filters the important detail can be revealed to show, for instance, areas of high cost uncertainty, areas of high cost and areas with potential for cost reduction.3. Allied to the cost map is a need to be able to compute and present cost uncertainty in the form of a cost tolerance .
