Summary on Grant Application Form
Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a new form of targeted radiotherapy which uses low energy thermalised neutrons to activate a boron-containing compound delivered to the tumour. In the resulting nuclear reactions, alpha particles are produced, which destroy the tumour cells in which they are initiated. This collaborative proposal, between the Interface Analysis Centre at the University of Bristol, the University of Birmingham, and the University of Oxford, aims to use a recently constructed surface analytical SIMS instrument to investigate the distribution of boron and other elements in tissue which has been treated with boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) compounds. The results will be used to determine the effectiveness of the various boron carriers, their specificity to the tumour areas, their transport to various areas of the body, and the effectiveness of boron delivery to the cell walls, and within the cells.Attention will be given to sample preparation methods such as cryomicrotoming and gold coating, or pressing into indium and coating with indium, so as to minimise sample charging and sample damage, and allowing meaningful SIMS results to be obtained.
