Fatigue failure of bone has been implicated in the aetiology of spontaneous femoral neck fractures, the collapse of vertebral bodies and in the loosening of total joint replacements. Crucial knowledge is lacking for the age related fatigue behaviour of human bone and the effects of the development of permanent strain. Both these characteristics of bone are of importance in understanding the processes leading to femoral neck fracture, collapse of vertebrae and loosening of total joint replacement. Potentially, computational stress analysis techniques have the ability to simulate these processes. However, to date, such techniques have not been able to do so due to the lack of base line data regarding the fatigue properties of bone. The aim of the proposal is to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the role of fatigue failure in femoral neck fractures and prosthetic loosening.Cranfield University will perform a detailed study into the age related fatigue behaviour of human cortical bone. This will provide the University of Southampton the necessary data to develop computational techniques to simulate the fatigue failure of bone. Once developed, the techniques will be used to examine the role of fatigue failure in femoral neck fractures and prosthetic loosening.
