This project will continue from the existing grant funded under the Clean Fuel Technology managed programme with the aim of researching CdTe/CdS for stable thin film photovoltaic solar cells aimed at the next generation of satellites. The project will continue the very successful partnership between NEWI and the University of St. Andrews, where novel tellurium and sulphur precursors have been synthesised at the University of St. Andrews and used for metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) onto ITO coated glass substrates at NEWI. The objectives of this new proposal will move on to address the current limitations to achieving higher efficiency cells, such as minority carrier lifetime in the CdTe absorber layer and reducing contact resistance to the p-type CdTe layer. The further reduction in growth temperature below 300 C will assist in improving long term stability of these films under a radiation environment in space, by reducing the diffusion of impurities from the substrate. A further enhancement of efficiency, that of introducing a HgCdTe layer to absorb infrared radiation, will be explored on this project if the other objectives have been met.
