Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is concerned with itegral equation methods for scattering of time harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic waves by unbounded rough surfaces. The proposed work arises, in part, out of collaboration with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), TRL concerned with predicting road and rail noise propagation outdoors over effectively unbounded ground surfaces, determining influences of ground surface type and terrain profile, and RAL interested in radar backscatter over sea surfaces and scattering of electromagnetic waves in the urban environment, associated with mobile phone communications. The proposed work comprises: mathematical analysis to establish well-posed integral equation formulations; development and analysis of fast numerical algorithms, with attention to dscretisation, iterative solvers, and fast schemes for the matrix-vector multiply; study of algorithms for the inverse problem of determining the rough surface profile, or the location and shape of an obstacle buried below a rough surface, from measurments of the scattered field.
