Summary on Grant Application Form |
The government's Integrated Transport Strategy is placing an increased reliance upon walking within the urban environment. The primary goal of this research is to investigate a tool(PEDFLOW) which can be used to model, at the microscopic level, movements in pedestrian networks and facilities in urban areas. In particular the model will assist in the design of pedestrian / vehicular interactions, the layout of street furniture, the effect of different geometrical designs for pedestrian facilities and the design of intermodal transport interchanges. The model will also be designed to investigate what-if analyses of new features in the pedestrian environment resulting from infra-structural changes. Outputs from the model will include new measures of pedestrian activity and mobility leading to a better understanding of the factors affecting the level of service provided by a collection of pedestrian infra-structures.The model will be informed and developed by on-street observation using CCTV, questionnaires and in-depth interviews.
