Summary on Grant Application Form |
Standard multileaf collimators, which are now widely available for high energy x-ray beam shaping, have limited spatial resolution. This imposes a limit on their application of conformal radiotherapy and makes them unsuitable for stereotactic radiotherapy. Micro-multileaf collimators are becoming available but they are extremely expensive and will, therefore, be inaccessible to many radiotherapy patients. Preliminary investigations of simple high resolution collimating device, that has been invented at the Christie Hospital, show that the performance of a micro-multileaf collimator can be achieved at considerably lower cost. We propose to: refine the design of the high resolution collimating device and produce a minimum of 2 prototypes, study its radiation characteristics, extend the dose calculation algorithm in our treatment planning system to be able to model this device, make clinical use of the device for specific applications which require highly shaped beams and in which its efficacy can be measured. The project will provide an opportunity for widening the range of application of conformal therapy and stereotactic radiotherapy to benefit patients with cancer and other conditions. It will contribute to the maintenance and development of the high international profile of UK Science and Engineering in the support of Radiotherapy.
