The programme described within this application has two distinct areas, both of which will be pursued in a collaborative programme between St Andrews University Physics department and Ninewells Hospital, Dundee University.a) Using the photosensitiser ALA, we will image fluorescence, auto-fluorescence and illumination. The resulting spectroscopic imaging system will be used primarily for detection and characterisation of skin cancers. Basal cell skins carcinomas are similar in nature within the GI tract and therefore act as a useful test-bed for the future design and assessment of endoscopic systems.Using the newly emerging laser diodes based on gallium nitride we will develop an intense fibre-coupled source for excitation of photosensitisers. Addition of red (diode) and green (microchip) lasers will enable a pseudo-white light source to be developed and this affords attractive options for sequential illumination and active colour balancing. This later feature is an especially important and relevant feature of endoscopic imaging procedures of the human body where extended control of the colour balance may be optimised for observing premagligment changes in the skin texture of internal organs.
