Time domain high frequency EM computations are increasingly used in a range of applications. They often exhibit better scalings than frequency domain, allow broad band analyses from a single run, and permit direct study of increasingly important electromagnetic pulse / compatibility problems. Other major applications areas include antenna design and radar cross section analysis.Finite element time domain (FETD) and integral equation time domain (IETD) methods are each excellent for some aspects of such computations, and less suited to others. Infinite exterior regions are well treated by IETD, while FETD suits 'interior', multi-material, possibly non-linear and anisotropic regions. Their capabilities are thus complementary, as is apparent from the body of work on development of steady-state hybrid FE/IE approaches in a range of disciplines (notably elastostatics, but including frequency domain methods in the electromagnetic area) which allow each to be used where it is most suited.Finite element time domain and integral equation time domain methods are now individually well enough established to make it practcable and timely to develop a time domain hybrid electromagnetic treatment.
