Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is based on a recent discovery of an unusual synergy in using mixed (6 component) colloid and alkoxide precursors for develop a stoichiometric mullite(3 A1203-2SiO2) in a completely crystalline ultra-fine grained and transparent form. The principles have been used to develop sol-spun fibres with mechanical properties superior to existing commercial oxide fibres. This project will attempt to provide a mechanistic explanation for the processing synergy, using NMR and electron microscopy, with a view to process refinements and industry pilot scale fibre processing. The fibre properties will be defined over a range of temperature and relates to sintered microstructure. The fibres will be coated and assembled within a ceramic component with cross-plied architecture, in the form of plaques, for property studies. In an industry-based component, a demonstrator turbine component (shroud seal) will be designed and fabricated, with reference to CMC properties. Other properties of the oxide (mullite) microstures will be briefly studied (e.g. optical properties of the oxide (mullite) microstructures will be briefly studies (e.g. optical properties of transparent fibres and tape cast films) with reference to other structural or functional applications.
