Summary on Grant Application Form
At present no methodology exists for aerospace companies to benchmark their current performance and progress through a systematic improvement process to achieve a lean and competitive business. The major deliverables from the proposed work are the creation and preliminary validation of such a Route Map, with its enabling tools and practices. This would embrace all elements needed to improve all aspects of a business and not just their manufacturing activities. It would include people issues, design issues and produce support, comparing favourably with best practice established in other industry sectors. This will be supported by the provision of appropriate dissemination systems. The proposed programme will continue the present work of the LAI, continuing to collect good practice case studies as they mature and support the adoption of these practices by aerospace companies. This programme will also include the continuation of normalisation research and collection and analysis of metrics data to monitor company progress towards the Lean Enterprise. The data generated will provide a springboard for undertaking deeper research and further capitalisation of the unique relationship already established between the four universities and some 40 UK aerospace companies and the US Lean Aerospace Initiative based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
