Summary on Grant Application Form |
The incorporation of long perfluoroalkyl substituents on metal reagents/catalysts offers an alternative approach to the perennial problem of separation and/or the recovery of metal reagents/catalysts/by-products on an industrial scale. Here, we seek to illustrate, using a project studentship, how this approach may be applied using industrially important metal complexes of oxygen-donor ligands (e.g. carboxylates, diketonates, alkoxides). For each class of ligand, (i) perfluorocarbon solvent compatibility of representative metal complexes will be established, (ii) the influence of the perfluoroalkyl substituents illustrated using model reactions (such as C-C bond formations, oxidations etc). and (iii) the efficiency of the separation of the organic product from the metal reagent/catalyst/by-product tested using liquid-liquid and liquid-solid extraction techniques.
