There are enormous quantities of gas hydrates in subsea sediments. Current estimates suggest that the amount of energy in these hydrates is twice total fossil fuel reserves. However, these gas hydrates are a safety hazard in drilling operations, as they could become unstable under typical wellbore conditions and produce large quantities of gas. Recently, considerable attention has been given to their role in global climate changes and possible positive feedback to global warming. Our preliminary investigations showed that CO2 could be disposed as gas hydrates in subsea sediments, reducing their emission to the atmosphere. Also, many geologists believe that the decomposition of natural gas hydrates in porous media could be responsible for subsea land slides.There is little information on gas hydrate formation and decomposition in porous media. This document, therefore, presents details of a research programme, investigating gas hydrates in porous media. The programme is an integrated experimental/theoretical study. Its objectives are to study the physical processes taking place in porous media, by conducting experiments in unconsolidated porous media, glass micromodels and using scanning electron microscope. Further, it is planned to investigate the possibility of disposing CO2 as gas hydrates in porous media.
