The project comprises a study on the performance and failure of high strength concrete columns during fire, using an extensive parametric experimental fire test programme as the principal means of investigation. The purpose is to understand the mechanisms of failure in the columns of high rise buildings, constructed of HSC, in fire, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms causing spalling as well as the influence of deterioration of material properties at elevated temperature. Emphasis is also placed on examining the development of the additional axial forces imposed on the columns due to axial restraint ensuing from the surrounding structure when a column is heated up in a fire. - which may also add to column failure. The principal factors under investigation are axial load level, degree of axial restraint and also heating intensity and duration, with some additional comment on moisture content and spalling prevention using polypropylene fibres. The research should form a sound basis of research knowledge which will give added confidence and support to the use of high strength concrete in an expanding export high rise building design and construction market.
