Complex oxide ceramic dielectric resonators have had a great impact on the microwave-based wireless communications industry yet, in contrast with recent 'hot' technological oxide chemistry areas, such as high-Tc superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance, they have not been subjected to crystal chemical analysis using modern diffraction techniques. Here we propose to apply state-of-the-art high-resolution neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction techniques to the BZT family of perovskite dielectrics in order to understand correctly the structure-property relationships and, using in situ neutron diffraction, to resolve specific issues relating to their synthesis and processing. The focus on both equilibrium structures and their variation with composition, and the development of the structure during processing is important in terms of the current usage and in the identification of higher performance materials for future application.
