Summary on Grant Application Form
Ships have not been used continuously in exposed west of Shetland locations. We still cannot predict the extreme response in large seas, where non-linear behaviour including intermittent wetting, wave slam and slap becomes vary important. Since these forces affect the amount and distribution of structural strength that needs to be provided it is important that they are well understood. Costs of slight under-design can be very expensive. This project provides an opportunity to compare full and model scale measurements and theoretical calculations and, in conjunction with other projects submitted by Newcastle, Strathclyde and Glasgow Universities, to:- Improve the theoretical calculation methods and- Through reliability calculation to determine appropriate safety factors for the different models.
