This research will link two simulation environments: (1) DDA, a discontinuous deformation analysis tool and (2) HYDRO, an analysis tool for flow through a dual porosity medium. The coupled environment will operate via a staggered calculation scheme.This coupled approach will allow for the modelling of:a. the effect of fluid pressure on the mechanics of the blocky solid and;b. the effect of deformation-induced porosity changes and evolving discontinuities on the flow pattern.The computational environment will be used to evaluate the capability of fractured mudrocks (shales) to hold back elevated fluid pressures within hydrocarbon reservoirs. Such situations are common in natural petroleum systems and are becoming of great financial and safety importance in the highly overpressured conditions found in deep, harsh environments. Sealing capacity is recognised throughout the petroleum industry as a major research area.
