Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of this application is to support a visit to Japan in response to an invitation to deliver a progress report at the XXIST ICPEAC conference in Sendai in July 1999 to deliver a progress report (theory and experiment) of work we have done with EPSRC support on the new problem of polarisational attachment to metallic clusters. This is a new process, in which we have shown that the dynamical polarisability of the delocalised electronic shell of a metallic cluster creates a rotating dipole in the field of a passing low-energy electron. This rotating dipole radiates energy (polarisational radiation) and, as a consequence, the passing electron loses kinetic energy and has a resonantly enhanced probability of capture. We have done both theory and experiments on this effect, which is up to 10 000 times as strong as Bremsstrahlung processes. There is strong international interest in our work, and Japan is a centre for research on metallic clusters. Thus, all the key researchers from the groups in Tokyo, Riken, Tohoku, Tsukuba, etc are expected to attend, leading to beneficial interactions for all.
