Summary on Grant Application Form |
This collaborative study involves the use of compressed C02 for the commercial scale extraction of very long chain essential fatty acid derivatives from the seeds of lunaria, echium and borage and (possibly) the separation of the components in lunaria oils. The seed is very expensive to produce due to poor crop yields and very high recovery is necessary. Consequently, good pretreatment of the seed is essential and fundamental research into the changes in the seed microstructure, which occur during pretreatment and subsequent extraction is proposed. Optimum pretreatment-methods will be sought and scale up procedures will be used to evaluate optimum operating conditions for the commercial units available to the group.
