The project will commence with a comprehensive survey of the literature on optical measurement of sound fields.A Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system will then be constructed using an Ultranac high speed camera, PC and scanner. A resonant sound field will be set up using a perspex duct terminated at one end by a loudspeaker. The air within the duct will be seeded with smoke particles and a series of images will be taken by the camera. Particle velocities measured using the PIV system will be compared with theoretical prediction and with measurements made using a Laser Doppler Anemometer.Images captured using the Ultranac camera will be analysed to obtain particle concentrations within the duct. The particle concentration will depend on the local pressure. Microphones placed along the duct will enable particle concentration measurements to be calibrated to provide a measurement of pressure. The pressure measurements will be compared with theoretical prediction. Pressure and velocity measurements will be combined to provide maps of specific acoustic impedance.A variety of resonant enclosures will be measured using the optical measurement techniques. The pressure and velocity disturbances during the passage of a travelling wave will also be measured.
