The first CLUK Research Colloquium, held at Sunderland in January 1998, was deemed an undivided success in meeting these objectives at a minimal cost. It was organised as a mini-conference, with successfully refereed submissions presented in sessions attended by established researchers. Selected papers will be published in the BCS eWiC series. However, established researchers were expected to meet full cost of their attendance. Only three participated, which constrained the feedback that could be offered to students.We aim to broaden participation of mature researchers at the 2nd Annual CLUK Research Colloquium, which will be run to a similar pattern at the University of Essex on January 11th - 12th 1999. We propose to offer to meet the cost of accommodation and subsistence of seven senior researchers (on the assumption that they will fund their own travelling expenses), and by meeting all expenses for two invited speakers (Professor Joanna Moore - Edinburgh and Dr Rens Bod - Leeds).The current application seeks to secure means to raise senior participation with out increasing the cost to students. Current fees of 55 have been maintained at last year's level and have been set to cover meals and refreshments, and meet the cost of duplication and administration.
