The application of moisture simulation models is currently severely compromised by the lack of a suitable database of material transport properties. The central focus of this project is an innovative moisture permeability measurement system which will overcome the deficiencies associated with current methods, namely, the excessively long test periods and the inability to separate the total measured flux into its vapour and liquid components. This new approach involves carrying out standard permeability tests under vacuum. A specially-designed pressure chamber will be developed, which will allow the remote monitoring of six test cups. The moisture transmission performance of six building materials will be investigated : two wood-based, two masonry and two insulation. Experiments will be conducted over the pressure range 0.4-1.0 bar, under a range of humidity conditions. The results will be incorporated within a comprehensive theoretical framework which will allow rapid determinations of permeability at reduced pressure to be related to the required values at atmospheric pressure. A methodology to allow the evaluation of vapour and liquid transport coefficients from the total measured moisture flux will form the basis of a new measurement protocol which will provide the full material transport information required by simulation models.
