Summary on Grant Application Form
Existing electromagnetic analysis tools are unable to analyse efficiently the types of conformal antenna arrays proposed for future (and current) wireless communication and radar systems. Without a suitable analysis tool, the design of these systems becomes reliant on heuristic techniques, leading to poor performance and/or expensive late-time design fixes. The powerful and flexible FDTD method is a popular electromagnetic analysis tool and it is proposed that, by employing enhancements to the basic method that have been pioneered by the authors, this tool can be made capable of efficiently and accurately characterising curved structures, including conformal array structures. The programme proposes a period to be spent on formulating techniques for the analysis of curved structures, followed by a period of experimental evaluation, using arrays provided by DERA (and if necessary simulated results using an entirely independent tool at British Aerospace defence Systems).
