Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research proposal is concerned with helping businesses get the right level of involvement with the supply of their manufacturing process technologies. This work complements the considerable body of research that has been carried out on make/buy decisions for product sourcing. It deals however with the sourcing of manufacturing process technologies, rather than the products that are actually manufactured. To aid this decision process a conceptual methodology has been formed, which now needs to be operationalised. The methodology is to be refined through application and evaluation within an operational context. To achieve this a case study based research methodology will be applied at the industrial collaborators (Rolls Royce plc). The research programme will have four phases. Phase 1 will finalise the case study research design. Phase 2 will be a series of case studies, where the investigators facilitate the application of the methodology. Phase 3 will refine the methodology design. Finally, phase four will apply the methodology, but the investigators will not intervene. On completion of the programme, the refined methodology and the associated cases will be documented as a handbook, and this will be available for wider dissemination within industry.
