Summary on Grant Application Form |
An ultra-sensitive, diode-laser-based spectrometer will be constructed and optimised for sensitivity and data acquisition rate. The spectrometer, based on the technique of cavity ring-down spectroscopy, will offer accurate, quantitative and rapid determination of concentrations at the sub ppm to ppb level. Such sensitivities will be demonstrated for numerous gaseous species including C02, water vapour, V0Cs, N20, H02 and N03. Potential applications include monitoring of emissions from industrial plants, combustion and plasma diagnostics, and atmospheric monitoring. The cw CRD spectrometer will also be coupled with an AAS experiment to demonstrate sub ppb detection sensitivities to race metals. The successful implementation of the laboratory spectrometer will lead to design and construction of simpler, lower-cost versions suited to field applications.
