Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme comprises six linked PhD projects at the three collaborating institutions. Normalisation of data obtained from the three different research centres is ensured by the use ofa) feedwater of the same quality, be it simulant or otherwise, and b) the same membrane materials. The Bath group will conduct bench-scale tests to assess the fouling propensity and cleanability of different membrane materials, ostensibly low-cost polymeric materials, and element configurations (tubular or flat plate) through a series of essentially non-biological trials. The Cranfield group will perform bench/pilot-scale trials, which will encompass testing the veracity of the Bath trials and determine the importance of biological action in promoting or suppressing membrane fouling. The Imperial group will investigate anaerobic and extractive systems using the same membrane materials, ultimately evaluating the comparative costs with aerobic systems.
