Modern industrial processes use many chemical screening and analysis methods to ensure that product quality control, legislative and safety requirements are fulfilled. With growing competition in the market place, industries rely heavily on analytical methods to produce a consistent, high purity, product. This project is aimed at developing a generic chemical detection technology which will help minimise the costs of analytical testing and improve throughput in practical applications. The technology will be based on the combination of AC electrokinetics and binding events on microbeads. By monitoring the motion of microbeads in AC electric fields, binding events on the surface of the microbeads can be detected. This allows a standard method of detecting the presence of a compound whilst sensitivity is provided by the choice of binding agent. This technology can be of use in many formats. However, to address issues of high-throughput screening, this project will develop the technology for use in microfabricated laboratory-on-a-chip type devices.
