Summary on Grant Application Form
This project was generated in response to a call from members of the White Rose Faraday Centre to develop a more detailed understanding of the issues affecting the design and use of packaging and in particular the problems associated with opening and closing packaged goods. Discussions with retailers, suppliers and packaging producers, at Faraday Workshops indicated that users often do not read the opening instructions printed on packing and open the package inappropriately, damaging the goods or injuring themselves. A need was identified for research to create packaging designs which do not offer the user the opportunity to open them inappropriately and inherently suggest the way in which the package should be opened. Thus the aim of this project is to investigate and evaluate the relationship between the design of the package and the cognitive decisions taken when opening and closing. In particular the research will examine the decision making process and modify packaging designs to limit the range of options available to the user.
