Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will provide a multivariate database concerning the 3D anthropometry and functional abilities of people together with a methodology to exploit the use of such data. This tool will enable the whole population, including those who are older or are disabled, to be considered when evaluating and optimising multivariate design issues involving access, fit, reach, vision, strength and posture. The database of 'individuals' will be accessible during computer aided design work so that the percentage accommodated can be estimated based upon criteria for task success set by the designer. The tool will be integrated with a human modelling system in order to 'test' each individual dataset and identify individuals who cannot achieve one or more of the criteria for successful interaction with the design. The tool will then support the designer in achieving a greater percentage accommodation, possibly involving more adjustment, modular components or a new perspective on the solution entirely. The database will comprise 100 individuals, the majority of whom are older and/or disabled, to provide a useful measure of the extent of variation in physical characteristics and capabilities of the whole population and to provide a preliminary database for the development and validation of the predictive tool.
