Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to further develop our approach to ylidic carbenes, and to explore the true range of carbenes which are stable enough for isolation and to examine the properties of these species. The preparation and characterisation of ylidic carbenes with new combinations of N-, O-, S-, and C- substituents will be undertaken, including (RO)2C, (RS)2C, Ar(R2N)C (and other R3C(R2N)C) and, if possible, suitable Ar2C species. The following properties of these ylidic carbenes will be studied: structures, rates of dimerisation, rotational barriers about the bonds to the carbene centre, the influence of complexation to lithium or other alkali metal species on the properties of these carbenes. Comparison of experimental data with theoretical calculations will be made. Synthetic applicationsof these carbenes and their metal complexes will be examined. In partular, the deliberate addition of co-ordinating, electropositive, metal salts and incorporation in these species of chiral amines will be used to control and direct carbene reactivity.
