Summary on Grant Application Form |
Quantum cascade (QC) lasers have the potential to revolutionise research in the chemical fingerprint spectral region. Unlike other sources which operate in this wavelength range these semiconductor lasers are robust, compact and electrically efficient. In addition, QC lasers are tuneable, spectrally bright, offer high average power and direct access to important wavelength ranges. Hence QC lasers are ideal for many applications such as spectroscopy. We intend to investigate the potential of QC lasers for ultra-sensitive spectroscopy. As part of this programme we will construct a spectrometer and compare the performance of QC lasers with other types of laser that operate in the 3-15 m spectral region with this spectrometer. We will investigate a variety of different spectroscopic techniques such as cavity ring down and photo-acoustic spectroscopy and identify the form best suited to the QC laser. After these initial studies the resulting spectrometer will then be used to make both laboratory and in situ measurements of given gases that play significant roles in then degrading of the global environment.
