Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposal is to enable the applicant to spend two months at the University of California at Berkeley in order to conduct collaborative research with Professor D.J.Steigmann. The work will focus on a) the development of pseudo-elastic mathematical models to describe non-linear inelastic effects in thin-film surface-coated solids, with particular reference to the modelling of damage in polymeric materials, b) the formulation and solution of prototype boundary-value problems based on the models derived in a), with special reference to the calculation of residual stress and strain distributions, and c) the initiation of studies aimed at extending the (quasi-static) modelling in a) to allow for large temperature changes and also viscoelastic effects such as creep and relaxation.
