Summary on Grant Application Form |
While it is now widely acknowledged that the design of caring environments can directly influence both the quality of life of, and quality of care received by older people with cognitive impairment, the evidence suggests a lack of consensus regarding both the environmental features which should be emphasised at design, and the critical outcomes which should be measured in post occupancy evaluations (POE). Combining expertise in architecture, dementia research, and residential care the proposed study would proceed in four stages: i) a systematic and critical review of all relevant literature bearing on design-dementia relationships in residential/nursing home care; ii) a large representative survey of existing residential/nursing home care establishments; iii) extensive modelling of the survey data specifically to test the strength of evidence supporting current guidelines and design recommendations (these analyses will, in particular, allow for factors often studied in isolation to be tested and evaluated in a real-world context); and iv) in conjunction with professional bodies and current stakeholders, conclusions drawn from the review and the survey will be used to inform the re-drafting of design and POE guidelines.
