Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the programme is to develop further the support provided for distributed multimedia applications. More specifically, our aims are to develop mechanisms and techniques for improving the information about the characteristics of VBR traffic entering networks and the use of such information for packet routing and admission control. The techniques and mechanisms to be developed in the programme will not in themselves constitute a framework incorporating a full protocol stack and prescribing specific types of networks. It will be possible to incorporate these mechanisms into different current and future frameworks. The programme concentrates on developing techniques for description of VBR (Compressed Multimedia) data generated by compression algorithms such as MPEG and routing mechanisms that take advantage of this improved information. As a result, more accurate knowledge about the traffic requirements of multimedia connections will be available and routers will have precise information about their future traffic flows. This will improve the efficiency of networks supporting multimedia applications and admission control will be performed more accurately, including provision for dynamic reconfiguration of QoS.
