Summary on Grant Application Form
To progress the development of rapid procedures for screening of effluents and waste waters by interrogation of biomaterials. Relevant parameters include assessment of toxicity, BOD and perhaps COD. This is to be achieved by a combination of two approaches. First, to use an array of physicochemical sensors to inform the interpretation of data from (whole cell) biosensors since the activity of these biomaterials is known to be influenced by parameters such as temperature and pH. Second, to investigate transducers to produce biological signals that are complementary and/or more discriminatory than existing redox mediated devices. In both of these cases, production and evaluation of research prototypes will be required. Another essential aspect of the work will be to investigate appropriate approaches to multi-variate data analysis so as to maximise the information from a potential wealth of data.
