Summary on Grant Application Form
This application for a travel grant is designed to support research activity on the MILLE (Minority Language Engineering) project. As the project has developed, it has become apparent that Indian Languages and particularly poor served with respect to language engineering resources - both in general terms (provision of word-processing software etc) and specifically with respect to corpus building work. As the project has begun to focus increasingly on Indian Language, the need to audit language engineering activities in a context where Indian Languages are dominant has grown. This application is for funds to enable a site visit to Sri Lanka to undertake such an audit. The director of British Council in Sri Lanka, Susan Maingay, has a greed to host the trip and is currently setting up a list of contacts who can be visited in order to examine the current state of Language Engineering in Sri Lank. Tony McEnery has been granted sabbatical leave by Lancaster University to undertake the visit in March/April 1999.
