Summary on Grant Application Form |
Previous research at Swansea, supported by Magnox, has shown that a customised serial section procedure coupled to electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) can be used to obtain the crystallographic indices of fracture surfaces in ?-iron. The new research will refine this 'crystallographic fractography' technique to include both sides of the fracture surface, and furthermore to develop a stereophotogrammetry approach to obtain a three-dimensional reconstruction of the fracture surface. The output data from these programmes will include quantification and spatial distribution (connectivity) of fracture plane types. These findings will be incorporated with data from Birmingham and Surrey and particularly will be used as refined input data for theoretical modelling and fracture processes. This combined approach will achieve the stated aim of enhancing understanding of the mechanisms of low temperature brittle fracture in ferritic materials.
