Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Guy's, Kings College and St Thomas's Hospitals Dental School (GKT) currently has a superplastic forming (SPF) facility developed for the production of medical and dental prostheses. To generate high quality prostheses, it is essential to apply an appropriate pressure-time profile. Using current state-of-the-art methods in the medical domain, the pressure-time profile is incorrectly determined, resulting in poor-quality prostheses, which have to be re-generated by a costly process of trial and error. In collaboration between GKT and University of Wales Swansea (UWS) we will devise new SPF finite element simulation software that will accurately calculate the pressure-time profile starting from high quality computer models of the patient. GKT will generate computerised surface representations of actual soft and hard tissue structures. These will be supplied to UWS, and the output of their simulation will be used by GKT to superplastically form prostheses. Experimental validation of the simulation will be achieved by SPF Ti-6A1-4V sheet onto ceramic dies. The hot strength and deformation characteristics of the dies will be determined at GKT using a modification of the cone test in the superplastic forming press.
