Summary on Grant Application Form
Traditionally design optimisation is an iterative process of creating a model, using a CAD system, carrying out some analyses which give indications of how to improve the design and then modify the model and repeating the process. This manual process contributes significantly to lengthening the design cycle and depends critically for its success on the skill of the designer. There is thus a need to develop a process, which requires less intervention and can be carried out within the CAD/CAM environment. The proposed research aims to develop a framework for Flexible Optimisation within a CAD/CAM Environment. The study will build on the existing research at Cranfield University. The outcome of the proposed research will make the use of optimisation techniques more popular with the designers, and thus will assist in designing a product right first time. The research involves multidisciplinary expertise on geometric modelling and optimisation and is expected to capture the 'industrial requirement' for design optimisation. The project will implement the framework through a prototype development, using a standard CAD/CAM system. The research team will involve the Nissan European Technology Centre (NETC) (as a user company) and SDRC UK Limited (as a major software provider) as the industrial collaborator.
