Summary on Grant Application Form
The research aims at i) understanding the factors controlling the application of zeolites as catalysts for sustainable fine chemicals synthesis in the liquid phase, ii) defining conditions for high productivity Friedel-Crafts catalysis using zeolites as solid acids, and iii) identifying optimal non-stationary catalytic reactor configurations for these purposes. The reactions to be investigated are the acylations of toluene by acetic anhydride and by benzoyl chloride catalysed by zeolite H-Beta. The methodology will integrate information at the molecular level (diffusion constants, adsorption rates and equilibrium constants, for the reactants and products) and basic kinetic data with catalytic reaction and catalytic reactor engineering to identify optimal conditions and reactor configurations for zeolite-catalysed Friedel-Crafts reactions and heterogeneous catalysis applied to fine chemical and engineering factors controlling reaction productivity. i.e. adsorption equilibria controlling kinetics which could be overcome by adopting suitable non-equilibrium reactor configurations. This project will provide a basic understanding of the behaviour of zeolites as solid solvents, propose new reactor configurations for operations in non-stationary or non-equilibrium conditions, and provide a detailed body of transferable knowledge concerning reactor configurations suitable for commercial exploitation.
