Summary on Grant Application Form |
The theme of this proposal is to investigate photo-double ionisation (PDI) of the simplest two-electron systems. PDI of helium and molecular hydrogen results in electrons and bare ions moving in the long-range Coulomb force which is of fundamental physical interest. Measurements of the mutual angular distributions of the electrons under a variety of kinematic conditions and with respect to a polarised light source will contribute significantly to the understanding of correlated particle dynamics. These experiments will be performed using highly-efficient toroidal electron spectrometers, which detect electrons over a wide angular range. Simultaneous ion-electron coincidence studies are also proposed for H2/D2, which will determine the electron angular distributions following PDI in oriented molecules. All of these measurements require synchrotron radiation and this proposal identifies specific experiments, including circular dichroism studies, to be performed at three facilities: SRS, LURE (France) and the Photon Factory (Japan). Theoretical support will also be provided by collaboration with colleagues in this international field.
