Summary on Grant Application Form |
The traditional deterministic codified rules are constantly under review and are slowly being replaced by the reliability-based design methods. Low cost computing power has brought a corresponding increase in the number and type of analysis tools available to the engineer. Modern software is supplementing in many situations and in some cases replacing physical testing leading to more complex simulation environment. However, the need for people who are skilled in computational modelling is now at a high due to this increased complexity. There is a need for people with better theoretical background who understand the behaviour of the systems which they are modelling and can work successfully with the software systems. The work of the proposed Network will be complementary to that of NAFEMS as far as deterministic design is concerned. But for reliability-based work there is a need to interface with sophisticated analytical tools including their model uncertainty and to create the failure domain for subsequent structural reliability analysis. The Network will provide a forum to discuss various issues related to the above activities and it will also play a role in assisting in the development of people who are given the task of significant amounts of analysis.
