Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this proposal, we aim to connect using powerful numerical techniques microscopic (particle surface), mesoscopic (assembly) and macroscopic (bulk) lengthscales to be able to predict the flow behaviour of 'real powders' causing frequent problems in industrial applications. To achieve our aims we propose to develop novel granular dynamics simulation algorithms which will provide hitherto unavailable physical and chemical labelling of particulate flow behaviour at the single particle (microscopic) scale. In a series of large-scale simulations (of order 1 million particles in 3D) followed by appropriate statistical analyses, the effects of particle angularity, particle surface moisture content and particle surface conductivity will be demonstrated for both gravity-driven and interstitial fluid impeded flows. Laboratory experiments will be conducted with real industrial materials to test the validity of our numerical simulation predictions of the macroscopic (bulk) flow behaviour observed in practice.
