Summary on Grant Application Form
Many environmental applications require modelling and prediction of subsurface rock properties based on data in three forms: core data; geophysical logging data; seismic survey data. Core data are derived from direct measurements on physical samples. The latter two types are indirect measurements obtained by interpreting signals. Each data type represents a different scale, precision and method of measurement employing fundamentally different physical principles. Core and log data may be sufficient to model properties in the vertical direction but expense and access constraints usually mean that the holes are too widely spaced for any lateral modelling which must be based on indirect data. Each data type represents average values of variables over different volumes; core data volumes are obvious and measurable but for the other two types of data the volumes are not obvious and are very difficult to estimate. This project provides a stochastic approach to the integration and calibration of these data. It will promote quality research into stochastic methods in geophysics, advance knowledge and technology in the interpretation and use of geophysical data and meet needs in the waste disposal and landfill industries. The methods contribute to public debate and understanding of risk associated with waste disposal.
