The programme of work based at Hull, which will feed into the global objectives of laboratory-on-a-chip, involves the investigation of solution based chemical synthesis in micro reactors. The aim of the work is to establish a fundamental understanding of what can and cannot be achieved in terms of reaction chemistry in a micro reactor environment and how this differs from the same chemistries performed in bulk solutions. Four model reactions have been selected for investigation, Suzuki and Heck couplings, condensation of an alpha-bromoketone, reduction of an imine to produce a secondary amine and the nitration of aromatic hydrocarbons. These well characterised reactions have been identified for specific features that will systematically challenge specific attributes of the proposed technology, thus demonstrating its advantages and limitations. The selected reactions may indicated advantaged such as interfacial non-linear synthesis, intermediate selectivity and the stabilisation of reactions that may be explosive. Initially the micro reactors will be planar micro-channel devices constructed from glass with channel dimensions ranging between 5-500 micro-metres. To demonstrate the commercial viability of the technology integrated demonstrator systems will subsequently be produced.
