Summary on Grant Application Form
The project activities at Newcastle will complement those of the other lab-on-a-chip partners by first developing a fundamental understanding of two-phase liquid/liquid and gas/liquid dynamics in micro-channels. The initial features of particular interest are slugging/wall flow and any non uniformity in the channel flow which is generated by the manifold design. The former is critical to an understanding of the interfacial area available for mass transfer and hence the reaction rate, while the latter will allow us to account for any performance loss when we scale-up to a reactor block containing many thousands of channels. Subsequently rapid reactions will be performed in both glass and stainless steel channels (50 - 200) for the following system with a view to optimising the conversion and selectivity which can be obtained 1) Aromatic nitrationFinally a stainless steel reactor matrix will be designed constructed and tested on one of the above systems.
