Summary on Grant Application Form |
Lasing has recently been demonstrated using conjugated polymers as the gain material. Optical rather than electrical pumping has been used in all such demonstrations because the excitation densities required to reach threshold are too high for electrical pumping with the device geometries used so far.We propose a program to address this problem by using microstructure to reduce threshold requirements for lasing in conjugated polymers. We will investigate laser structures based on waveguides and 2D periodic arrays. Thresholds will be lowered by making use of microstructure to reduce the mode volume of the laser cavity, to apply feedback, to control output coupling and suppress unwanted modes. Structures suitable for electrical and optical pumping will be considered including the possibility of making a hybrid laser, in which the conjugated polymer is pumped by a laser diode. The project will open the way for electrically pumped laser sources to be developed spanning a wide range of visible wavelengths.
